Keep cheese fresh and mold-free for weeks with expert's simple food storage hack - The Mirror US
Cheese is a staple in many households, often used to enhance pasta dishes or fill hearty sandwiches. However, it can be one of the pricier items in your shopping cart, making it all the more frustrating when you have to toss out a block because it's become crusty or hard.
Cheese can lose its moisture when exposed to air and cold temperatures, leading to a loss of flavor if left uncovered in the fridge. A common hack is to wrap cheese in clingfilm to keep it fresh, but this can trap moisture and lead to mold or discoloration.
Fortunately, there's a simple solution. Food experts at @imperfectfoods shared their storage hack on TikTok, explaining that the best way to prevent cheese from going bad is to use vinegar.
They assured viewers that this wouldn't affect the taste of the cheese, adding: "No, you will not taste it, and it will help prevent your cheese from moulding."
All you need to do is slightly dampen a clean cloth or a sheet of strong kitchen roll with vinegar and use it to wrap your cheese. Then, place the wrapped cheese into an airtight container, reports the Express.
"It should keep without molding for weeks," the experts said.
This isn't the first time we've heard about this trick. Venae Watts, owner of Minerva Dairy, shared with Martha Stewart's website: "Putting a small amount of vinegar onto cheesecloth or a paper towel before storing your cheese will help save it from mold.
"The vinegar acts as a kind of barrier and kills mold. You may be thinking your cheese will taste like vinegar when you go to eat it, but it won't."
